Fertility Bird Egg

I created an egg yesterday, and took some pictures along the way.  According to traditional Ukranian ideas, the bird on the egg symbolizes fertility and the fulfillment of wishes.

I started with a white egg and applied wax to the areas I wanted to remain white.  Then I dyed the egg yellow.

Next I applied wax where I wanted it to remain yellow.  Then I dyed the egg orange and applied more wax.  (I forgot to take a picture.)  Afterwards, I dyed the egg green.

I hope you’re seeing the pattern…  Here is the egg after being dyed red and finally black.

Basically it’s a big ball of ugly!  I carefully heat the egg over a candle and wipe away the wax to reveal the finished egg.
